Favier Oysters: Showing the passion behind the ASC label

Behind our ASC label, committed men and women work to farm seafood with care, while also respecting the natural environment and the communities around them.

Dominique Favier, an oyster farmer in southwestern France, embodies the dedication and passion that all our producers have towards their profession, the ocean and seafood. Here’s her story…

Preserving nature for future generations

Dominique Favier manages an ASC-certified oyster farm in La Tremblade – found in France’s Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Raising oysters has always been part of her life, and her husband’s too. It’s unsurprising that their two daughters have now followed in their steps.  

The farm has been in the Favier family since 1936. By passing on their accumulated know-how from generation to generation, they have been able to continuously limit the farm’s impact on the environment and ensure consistent quality of the oysters they produce. 

In 2016, the Favier family farm obtained ASC certification – the first oyster farm in France to do so.  

They felt the importance of striking a balance between meeting the needs of society and protecting the planet had never been clearer.  

The ocean must remain alive, with its fauna and flora. It must be preserved.”

Protecting and respecting workers

All ASC farms implement practices that respect the rights of male and female workers and protect them to ensure they are well-equipped to do their jobs safely and properly.  

“It’s a very physical job, which is why the gestures and postures course was very important, so that employees learn to work in good positions.” 

At the Favier farm it goes one step further; the balance is also found in the family atmosphere that members of the Favier family instil in their employees. This holistic approach fosters an environment where workers thrive within a familial embrace, ensuring their well-being beyond mere work practices. 

Through their dedication to the product and the protection of its environment, Dominique and the rest of the Favier family – past and present – have created a legacy of oyster excellence. Long may it continue.
