First Italian trout farms ASC certified

November 24, 2014

More ASC certified trout soon in the market

The first ASC certified producers in Italy have gained ASC certification. Three trout farms in the central Italian regions of Umbria and Marche were certified against the ASC Freshwater Trout Standard for responsible aquaculture.

Biselli Farm, Freddara di Norcia Farm and Sefro Farm, all owned by the Azienda Agricola Troticoltura Erede Rossi Silvio, are the second set of farms globally to achieve ASC certification against the ASC Freshwater Trout Standard. The farms were awarded ASC certification following an independent assessment by third party certifier Bureau Veritas Denmark.

More ASC certified trout in the market

In Germany, the quality seafood brand Gottfried Friedrichs has launched a responsibly farmed trout caviar product this month, ‘Forellen-Caviar von Gottfried Friedrichs’, sourced from the three Erede Rossi Silvio Group’s certified farms.

Erede Rossi Silvio Group has a total of 12 farms with a yearly production of around 5,000 tonnes which is distributed to Italy and other European countries such as Belgium, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

Six more trout farms – four Italian and two Danish – are currently under assessment against the ASC Freshwater Trout Standard.

The ASC programme: meeting the growing demand for responsible aquaculture

By 2018, it is estimated that more than half of the fish consumed globally will come from aquaculture. The ASC programme works to transform aquaculture towards environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

ASC certified trout farms must demonstrate that they use responsible aquaculture practices that minimise their environmental and social impact. The ASC on-pack logo helps consumer choose trout products that have been farmed following the ASC strict standard for responsible farming.
