First Swiss retailer offers ASC certified smoked salmon
November 6, 2014
Migros is the first Swiss retailer to offer ASC certified responsibly produced smoked salmon.
The salmon comes from the ASC certified Lerøy Aurora farms located in the rugged cliffs and rough fjords of Northern Norway.
The ASC is an independent not-for-profit certification programme. Farms that are independently assessed against the ASC standards must meet strict requirements to confirm they operate responsibly and with respect for the environment and community. For example, the quality of the water must be controlled and regularly monitored, the fish meal and oil used must be traceable to a well managed fishery and the salmon must be treated well. There is a stringent restriction on the number of escapes from the farm, there is no unnecessary use of antibiotics and chemicals and the farmer must prove that they care for the people working on the farms as well as the local community.
Migros is now a step closer to achieving its ambitious goal of offering customers seafood that only comes from responsible or sustainable sources by 2020. Already, 94 per cent of Migros’ fish and shellfish meet this requirement. Migros has been a loyal supporter to the ASC programme and we congratulate them on this milestone.
