Growing commitments for ASC certified seafood
June 13, 2013
Availability of ASC certified seafood is set to increase in North Carolina following a commitment yesterday by grocer The Fresh Market to choose responsibly sourced seafood.
The Fresh Market joins a growing international trend in making formal commitments to support responsible aquaculture practices and sustainable fishing, as it announces a new national partnership with The New England Aquarium.
Supporting responsible aquaculture
The grocer, which has 130 stores across North Carolina, worked with the aquarium to develop a sourcing policy that outlines detailed principles for wild caught and farmed seafood and guides the purchase of all The Fresh Market’s seafood.
As a result of their research and commitment to responsible seafood, The Fresh Market will preferentially choose seafood suppliers that are certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council, the Marine Stewardship Council and the Global Aquaculture Alliance.
Helping consumers make positive choices
The ASC on-product logo makes it easier for consumers to get involved and make positive environmental choices. The commitment by The Fresh Market means consumers will find it easier to choose certified sustainable seafood.
ASC certified seafood bearing the consumer label is a credible responsible product for a reasonable price and helps retailers address the growing demand for responsibly produced seafood.
