Hong Kong Sustainable Seafood Guide helps consumers choose responsibly farmed fish

July 9, 2014

Seafood consumers in Hong Kong can now enjoy shopping for responsibly farmed fish with the help of the latest edition of the Sustainable Seafood Guide. For the first time, the guide includes information about the ASC logo for responsible aquaculture.

“This is a great step forward in informing Asian seafood customers about the ASC. By choosing seafood with the ASC logo, shoppers can make a difference and help protecting oceans, vulnerable marine environments and local farm communities,” said ASC’s CEO Chris Ninnes.

“There are currently 1120 ASC certified seafood products available in 37 countries across the globe. And, we already have a strong presence in Asia. With the support of initiatives such as the Sustainable Seafood Guide and the recent Asian Sustainable Seafood Festival, I am confident that ASC’s presence in the Asian market will continue to increase.

“Not only is our market share growing in Asia, but we have an expanding base of certified farms in the region including Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam. And we anticipate strong future growth.”

Guide for responsible seafood shopping

The Hong Kong Sustainable Seafood Guide is produced by WWF Hong Kong. The handy leaflet is part of a global set of fish guides that help consumers make responsible choices when shopping for fish. The guide simply informs shoppers which seafood to enjoy and which to avoid.

The methodology that the guide is based on has been developed by WWF, Seafood Choices Alliance, North Sea Foundation and the Marine Conservation Society. Fish guides can now be found in 18 countries around the globe.

Logo for responsible aquaculture

The ASC on-pack logo was launched in 2012. The logo reassures consumers that the fish comes from certified farms, which use responsible farming methods that minimise their environmental and social impacts. ASC certified farms deliver a cleaner seabed, cleaner water and healthier fish; preserve the diversity of the species and wild population; adhere to strict feed requirements and ensure social responsibility.

All ASC labelled products can be traced back through the entire supply chain to a responsible managed fish farm. ASC chain of custody certified companies are assessed against strict requirements.

The ASC logo helps customers make an informed choice when shopping for seafood. And, when they choose responsibly produced, ASC certified seafood, they reward certified farms and actively contribute to preserving healthy fish stocks, protecting vulnerable coastal zones and ensuring that seafood can continue to feed a growing population in the future.
