New ASC colleagues

September 16, 2013

Please join us in welcoming some new colleagues to ASC. Esther Luiten joins ASC in October as European Manager Commercial Marketing. Esther will focus on engaging commercial stakeholders with the ASC certification and labeling programme. This is critical to establishing the programme and linking demand and supply streams across the various European markets.

Esther has over 10 years’ professional experience in the seafood sector. Whereas sustainability was not a topic when she started, during her role as deputy director of a Dutch NGO the topic was clearly put on the agenda. Now, the Netherlands is one of the leading European markets in sustainability selling certified seafood. Esther was a member of the Marine Stewardship Council’s Stakeholder Council and is still involved in discussions on the evolving landscape of sustainability and certification. In her most recent role at The Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH), she was responsible for the IDH Aquaculture Program and worked on the international value chains of farmed seafood, transforming them towards sustainability with a clear eye for the business case of producers and value chain companies as well. At the ASC, Esther will again contribute to making the market work both for the public and private good.

Marrit Rooda recently joined the ASC as Standards & Certification Coordinator. Marrit will focus on the implementation ISEAL codes (e.g. Impact Code, Assurance Code) and ASC standards comparison among other things. Marrit has a strong background in sustainable market transformation processes. She brings over eight years of experience having supported many of today’s well-known certification and roundtable initiatives like RSPO, RTRS and BonSucro. She has acted in different capacities at UTZ Certified (communications, certification, traceability etc.) and as a consultant to several clients in her role at NewForesight.

Finally, we welcome three smart and dedicated interns, who will be supporting the ASC standards team and the communication team. Daan van der Blom studied Coastal Zone Management and recently completed his Master in Science for Sustainable Development at Linkoping University. Stefan Vasilev studied International Relations and is in the final stage of his MSc International Development Studies at Wageningen University. Marc Torras has worked as a journalist at various Media companies. He holds a Master in Communication for Social and Armed International Conflicts at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
