Skretting: Transforming Feed for Aquaculture’s Future

On Norway’s rugged west coast, the steady hum of Skretting’s ASC-certified feed mill in Stavanger carries more than the sound of production. It carries purpose.

Each day, the mill transforms ingredients from land and sea into pellets that nourish farmed fish across the Nordics. These fish, in turn, go on to feed people all around the world. It’s meticulous work, but behind every feed pellet lies a deeper ambition: to ensure that growth in aquaculture goes hand in hand with sustainability.

A Collective and Global Responsibility

Fish farming in Norway produces around 1.8 million tonnes of seafood annually and employs more than 35,000 people – it’s the country’s second largest export source.

Where there are fish being farmed, there is a need for feed, and Skretting plays a central role in providing it responsibly.

“If the aquaculture industry wants to continue growing at the same pace that it is now, fish need to be produced in the most sustainable way possible. To do that, sustainably produced feed is key to the future.”

Job van Mil, Sustainability Specialist at Skretting

As a global leader in aquafeed, Skretting recognises the responsibility and opportunity that comes with that scale. To feed the future responsibly, sustainability must begin at the source — with the feed itself.

Evolving Challenges, Broader Perspectives

Feed production depends on a complex web of ingredients; from marine and land-based sources, often sourced globally. Each ingredient carries environmental and social impacts that reach far beyond the mill gates.

Looking back a couple of decades, the primary focus of producing more responsible feed was on using less fish – marine ingredients, such as fishmeal and fish oil (and this is still the case in some regions). Then soy became a big part of the mix as a replacement for marine ingredients, and the industry had to deal with deforestation concerns. There has always been a new issue.

These evolving challenges made one thing clear: creating lasting change requires looking beyond single issues

Skretting, as well as many other leading feed companies, recognised that meaningful progress depends on taking a broader, more systematic approach to sustainability.

Implementing the ASC Feed Standard has provided exactly that framework.

“ASC Feed Certification looks at sustainability holistically and has given us a toolbox of how to do sustainability assessments. For the industry, it’s driving openness and traceability.”

Elisabeth Ueland, Quality Manager for Raw Materials & Suppliers at Skretting

Responsibility from Source to Pellet

Real change starts long before production. It starts with understanding every link in the chain.

Skretting’s Stavanger feed mill became ASC-certified in early 2025. As part of the certification process, they conducted detailed assessments of suppliers and producers: looking at everything from environmental permits and waste handling, to working hours and labour practices.

Even before raw materials enter the feed mill, they’ve been through a rigorous assessment process.

“The ASC Feed Standard helps us focus on the producers of the different raw materials and do proper assessments on them, to go one step further down the supply chain and do due diligence.”

Elisabeth Ueland, Quality Manager for Raw Materials & Suppliers at Skretting

Inside the mill itself, the same attention to detail continues. Energy and water use are closely monitored; waste is managed responsibly; and the health and safety of their workers is a top priority.

This approach has empowered Skretting Stavanger to build stronger accountability — not only within its own operations, but among its producers and suppliers.

While implementing the ASC Feed Standard has been demanding, it has also been transformative and has given Skretting a practical framework to turn ambition into action and action into lasting change.

“The ASC Feed Standard has been challenging at times to implement; however, it pushes us to be better than we were yesterday. We are being helped to make that step forward, not only at Skretting but across the whole industry.”

Job van Mil, Sustainability Specialist at Skretting

A More Transparent Future

For Skretting, the ASC Feed Standard isn’t just about compliance. It’s about choosing change. It extends beyond the mill’s operations, driving openness, trust, and collaboration across the entire aquaculture sector.

It aligns feed producers, farmers, and retailers around common expectations of responsibility and transparency, and empowers them to keep improving together.

Responsible feed will only become more important in the years ahead. Skretting believes the feed industry must stand proud, remain transparent, and continue pushing for progress. By embracing the ASC Feed Standard, they are not only committing to progress for themselves but helping to elevate the entire industry.

At Skretting Stavanger, every batch of ASC conforming feed is a statement of intent: that sustainability and growth are not opposing forces, but partners in shaping the future of aquaculture. One responsible feed pellet — and one bold choice for change — at a time.
