ASC labelled responsibly farmed fish introduced in the Finnish Fish Guide

March 10, 2014

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is pleased to announce that the Finnish Fish Guide now includes ASC labelled responsibly farmed fish for the first time.

Following the Dutch, Swedish, Indonesian, Spanish and Belgian versions; the Finnish guide is the latest one to offer consumers help in choosing the right, sustainably farmed seafood.

“We are delighted that ASC responsibly farmed products are now included in the Finnish Fish Guide. I would like to thank WWF Finland for their cooperation and dedication in making this possible. This will give us increased visibility and enable us to make further progress in the Finnish market to promote sales of products from certified farms” said ASC’s CEO Chris Ninnes.

To celebrate the launch of their new Fish Guide, WWF Finland held a press event in Helsinki, Finland. Sampsa Vilhunen, Head of the Marine Programme: “Norwegian salmon is the most consumed fish in Finland and WWF is waiting for ASC-certified salmon to enter the Finnish market, as this would help improve the sustainability of fish consumption among Finns”.

About the guide

The Fish Guide is developed by WWF, Seafood Choices Alliance, North Sea Foundation and the Marine Conservation Society. It is available in more than 18 countries around the world and aims to help consumers when it comes to making responsible seafood choices. According to the guide, the issue is of utmost importance because the choices of today’s seafood consumers can determine whether tomorrow’s generations will continue to enjoy the oceans’ riches.

Helping consumers make responsible choices

The ASC on-pack logo was launched in 2012 and aims to reassure consumers that their seafood comes from farms that limit their impacts on the environment and local communities. It guarantees that ASC certified seafood products can be traced back through the supply chain to a responsibly managed fish farm.

Consumers can actively help the aquaculture industry become more environmentally and socially responsible. Through their buying choices, seafood shoppers are rewarding certified fisheries and farms for their responsible practices.  This way they contribute to preserving healthy fish stocks, protect vulnerable coastal zones and ensure that seafood can continue to feed a growing population in the future.
